- The print is kept with seven others (1992,1003.13 to 20) in a grey paper wrapper printed with the series title and the publication detail on the cover: 'Compositionen / und / Handzeichnungen / aus dem / Nachlasse von Franz Pforr / Herausgegeben durch den / Kunstverein zu Frankfurt am Main / Zweites Heft / 1834'.
The present composition derives from studies from the male nude Pforr executed in Rome from June 1810 to May 1812, shortly before his death the following month, see H. Thommen, `Im Schatten des Freundes. Arbeitsmaterialien von Franz Pforr im Nachlass Ludwig Vogels`, Basel, 2010, pp. 233-4, fig. 115 (impression in the Stiftung fuer Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts, Olten). Pforr`s favoured model was a young Roman, Xaverio Benni, of whom there is a detailed study in graphite dated 25 November 1810 in the Olten Stiftung (fig. 113 in ibid., p. 229). Overbeck also favoured Benni as a model.
