In composition and general typology of the figures, this drawing resembles the 'St Luke Painting the Virgin and Child' (1992,0516.108), which may be dated 1611. The present drawing is almost certainly from this same moment in Lanfranco's career and appears to be the earliest surviving example of his red chalk modelli.
The studies on the verso are so faint as to be indecipherable.
