- Text from F.Carey, 'Modern Scandinavian Prints', 1997, cat.94:
'Cobra' was one of several experimental journals produced during the 1940s and early 1950s, including the Danish 'Helhesten', the Dutch 'Braak' and 'Reflex', the German 'Meta' and 'Blok' from Czechoslovakia. The composition of 'Cobra' throughout its ten issues from 1949 to 1951 (no. 8/9 existed only in proof form because there was insufficient money for its publication) exemplified the collaborative spirit that was an essential tenet of the movement as a whole. Much of the activity took place within the transient community of artists and writers who congregated at the Ateliers du Marais in Brussels, where Pierre Alechinsky (born 1927) installed a lithographic press on which the Belgian numbers of 'Cobra' were printed. The editor-in-chief was Christian Dotremont, with a changing cast of guest editors. Among them was the Danish architect Robert Dahlmann Olsen, guest editor for the first issue, which was produced in Copenhagen at the Sørensen workshop in an edition of 1000 copies. The design for the cover was a joint effort by Jorn, Egill Jacobsen (born 1910) and Carl-Henning Pedersen (born 1913), and within the magazine were four other original lithographs by Jorn, Jacobsen, Ejler Bille and Pedersen. Other publications associated with 'Cobra' were 'Le Petit Cobra', also edited by Dotremont, the first number of which was printed in Brussels in 1949, and 'Bibliothèque de Cobra', which produced fifteen volumes in 1950 under the editorship of Jorn in Copenhagen. (All the issues of 'Cobra' are reproduced in 'Cobra 1948-1951' (Paris, 1980).)
