- First published in Scribner's Monthly in November 1877, when the author of the pastel was thought to be Angelika Kauffman. The printed number shows that this belongs to the reprint in Cole's 'Selected Proofs' of 1881 or 1887.
The sitter's identity in uncertain; the following publications identify her as Polonia Helena, rather than Sophie Potoska:
