- The 1991 British Museum 'Recent Acquisitions' label read: "In 1943 Richards had moved away from the constructivist style apparent in the earlier drawings on costermongers shown here, to develop a fluid, sensuous treatment of his subject. Another watercolour in the British Museum of 1947 shows a costerwoman engaged in a dance of death; the bacchanalian theme ultimately triumphed in a remarkable series of costers of 1951-2."
