- The 1991 Recent Acquisitions Exhibition label text:
A study for an engraving. Barendsz. was described by the artist and poet Karel van Mander in 1604 as one of the most important Amsterdam artists of his generation, because after living in Titian's house in Venice he was able to transmit the most recent stylistic innovations from Italy to the Netherlands. Forty sketches by Barendsz. of the 'Life of Christ' presumbly intended for a series of engravings, were recorded in 1769 by the collector Pierre Jean Mariette, of which twenty-four are now known. Only five, including the present example, were ever engraved. The painterly, impasto technique employed by the draughtsman conveys a sense of the style that Barendsz. had absorbed in Venice and which was to win the admiration of his northern contemporaries.
Not in Popham.
