- Curator's comments
- 'Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France' is a survey of France's national heritage conducted by Charles Nodier, Baron Taylor and Alphonse de Cailleux, and abundantly illustrated by lithographs. This ambitious project, which required to send about a hundred artists in the different parts of France, was published in a series of twenty-one volumes between 1821 and 1878.
For more information on the survey, see Beraldi, 'Graveurs du XIX Siècle', Vol. XII.
This plate was originally made for the second volume of 'Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France'.
