- Curator's comments
- The first of a sequence of three variations of the same print. As the lettering states, this was Bonnet's first plate in his 'crayon manner', imitating the then popular technique of drawing 'à trois crayons'. To do this he used a second plate in white, and a third plate in red.
The second version of this plate adds two new plates inked in blue and green. This turned the 'crayon manner' into Bonnet's 'pastel manner'.
The third version is a later reduction of the print using only two plates: this must have been because of the great difficulty of printing good impressions in multiple plates.
