- Text from Frances Carey and Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no.95a
This portrait of Heckel was the second print in the Brücke portfolio of 1909. The third was an etching entitled 'Old houses in Dresden'. According to the 'Bericht' (report) of activities for 1908 which accompanied the prints, "all the impressions are taken from original plates and printed on a small hand-press. Only the printing of the etching was entrusted to C. Sabo, Berlin. The two lithographs are specially drawn for this publication, and there are no impressions printed apart".
In style this lithograph seems to be a deliberate contrast to 1983,1001.37. It is drawn with wash rather than chalk, there is no use of turpentine, and the edges are left uninked. It is therefore impossible to say whether it is printed from the same stone, although the measurements would suggest that it was. Like Pechstein's lithograph of the same year (1981,0620.51), the outline drawing betrays the influence of Matisse.
