- Text from Frances Carey and Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no.100.
Whereas Schmidt-Rottluff's woodcuts were produced fairly regularly between 1905 and 1927, the intaglio prints were made in odd groups: eleven etchings in 1907-8, eleven drypoints in 1915 and a larger number of drypoints and engravings between 1920 and 1924. According to Wietek (1971, p. 133), the eleven prints of 1915 were all made during the first months of the year while Schmidt-Rottluff was in Berlin awaiting military call-up. This drypoint of 1915 is unusual in that it reproduces in reverse the composition of a painting of 1914, now in the von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal (Grohmann 1956, plate 260).
The two models are found in other paintings of 1914 (also illustrated Grohmann, 1956, plate 260). An undescribed first state of this print is Wustrated as plate 94 of the 1974 edition of Gustav Schiefler, 'Meine Graphiksammlung'.
