Butler explored ideas for sculpture with his drawings but treated both sculpture and drawing as two very separate disciplines. This figure with spiky growths similar to pitchforks bears a torso that recalls Butler's standing figures of men and women of this period. At this time Butler was working on ideas for the 'Unknown Political Prisoner', a competition organized by the ICA to 'pay tribute to those who had sacrificed their liberty to the cause of human freedom'. Butler was awarded first prize in 1953 but his design was never realized.
