- Curator's comments
- Although this drawing looks awkward at first, the style of laying in the washes and the use of pen and ink is very close to the manner of Place's topographical wash landscapes. The drawing was found attached to the verso of the Place mezzotint of a Tavern Scene after Adraien Brouwer, presented by the same donor (1982-10-2-19). Place was articled to an attorney when he left London after the outbreak of the Great Plague. He settled in York, drawing portraits, animals and still life, but was best known for his topographical landscapes in the manner of his friend Hollar. Place was one of the earliest English mezzotinters.
