- Text from Frances Carey & Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no.132 [1982,0724.27(4)]
The plate has such a mass of erasures and reworkings that it is difficult to decipher. Three different positions of the left leg of the man are visible. Such pentimenti are particularly common in the drypoints of the early War years. Beckmann seems to have liked leaving such traces visible in the plate so as to create an agitated surface from which the figures emerge. The erasures prove that Beckmann regularly composed directly onto the plate, and this is confirmed by the almost complete absence of preparatory drawings for the prints. One of the rare exceptions to this pattern is 1982,0724.27(6); the few prints after paintings are a separate case.
