This self-portrait closes the series which was opened by another self-portrait no. 135 (1982,0724.27(1)). There is some disagreement in the literature on Beckmann as to which comes at the beginning and which at the end. The list of contents of 'Gesichter' states that plate 1 is 'Selbstbildnis 1917' while plate 19 is 'Selbstbildnis 1918'. This plate is undated, but the other one carries the pencil date 1917- whence the order adopted here, which differs from Hofmaier's.

According to Hofmaier, this is plate 1 of 'Gesichter', opening the series (see Curator's Comments for 1978,1216.5).
