Album quarter-bound in leather (worn) and cloth-covered boards with "Scribblers' Book" on the spine and front cover, in a crimson leather wrapper stamped "REDLEAF." on the front, containing 66 leaves with 163 drawings on sheets laid down (or drawn directly) onto the album leaves and front endpaper, with mainly figure studies, portraits, hunting subjects (dogs, game, gamekeeper, sportsmen), portraits and landscapes; drawn on the recto and sometimes also on the verso; including portraits of Barnard, Paganini, Sidney Smith, Ld de Lisle, Thomas Stothard, Sir Martin Archer Shee, Leslee, Jones, Clint ARA, Flaxman, Chanbray (?), the Duke of Devonshire, Sir Geoffrey Wyatville, Rev. P Dod, Gen. Phipps, the Duke of Sussex, Lord Strathallan, Mathews, Mrs Henry Wells, Sir Richard Westmacott, Thomas Butler, Henry Perronet Briggs RA (1791-1844), William Wells of Redleaf (?), Thomas Phillips (1770-1845), Napoleon, Henry William Pickersgill (RA (1782-1875), Norton ARA, Sydney Smith, L[ad]y Stepney, William Etty, General Hall, Morton, heads of artists W.Collins, Hilton, Cooper, William Wells, Howard, Leslie, S D Wilkie; also miscellaneous subjects including a milkmaid, knife-grinder (?), caricature with a beggar, man playing the hurdy-gurdy, woman with children, prisoner in the dock, cobblers, artists at the easel, fishing boats and other vessels, beach scenes, travel by coach, peep-show of the Battle of Waterloo, scene with a priest visiting a peasant family, 'Orientalist' scene with groom and horses, figures by a well, drawing room, Italian costume, lakeside terrace, moonlight and winter scenes, cottage, lodge, group of figures with a Guy, a prisoner in the dock, swans, horses, bulls, views of Greenwich, Scheveling Beach, Hastings, Elton Park, Holne Wood dairy, scenes at Chillingham and landscapes. c.1819-1842 [or possibly 1885]
Most drawings in pen and brown (occasionally grey) ink with brown and/or grey wash; black chalk with grey wash; black and red (or white; or blue and yellow) chalk; brown chalk; graphite; watercolour; brush drawing in brown ink; charcoal; many drawings over graphite, and/or touched with white, chalk or bodycolour, some with scratching out; several on blue, grey or buff paper

- The album was assembled for William Wells of Redleaf and and contains drawings by artists who visited his house and by members of his family; some hands are identifiable and are listed below. There are two press-cuttings and a note expressing the desire that the album should come to the BM (undated, late 19thC). See the Register for a list of individual drawings, and for the following identification of artists (by Lindsay Stainton).
