- Curator's comments
- These seven prints predate Lili von Braunbehrens' 'Stadtnacht', the book of poetry in which they appeared as illustrations. The book was marketed under Beckmann's name. For the text that accompanies each illustration, see Hofmaier (no.164-170, pp.434-449).
A translation by Verena Bertmaring reads as follows: "Trinklied, by Lili von Braunbehrens/ You shall drink, drink!/ Lard your forks/ And drink for as long/ Until the vaults laugh at you/And you won't know the time anymore./ But don't stammer afterwards/ Of Love!/ Do you know of it/ You drunkards?".
Plate 3, entitled 'Verbitterung' (Bitterness), is a self-portrait.
