The print was published in 'Paris, journal non politique' on 5 April 1853.
According to the catalogue, the series 'Messieurs du Feuilleton' comprises nine lithographs, all published in that journal. also referred to as 'Paris (Journal)' or simply 'Paris'.
'Messieurs du Feuilleton' is one of 18 sub-series forming the large series 'Masques et Visages' consisting of prints by various artists, many of them published in 'Paris'. Gavarni's lithographs for 'Masques et Visages' were also printed 'sur blanc', ie. without text on the verso, in individual sets forming albums.
One of a suite of nine portraits of various sitters, April-September 1853, comprising part of a series of lithographs published by 'Paris, journal non politique' with the title 'Masques et Visages'. A proof impression sold Piasa 17 April 2008, lot 218, carried an autograph dedication by Edmond de Goncourt (later with Antoine Cahen catalogue VIII 2009).
