Gere & Pouncey 1983
The lot in Christie's sale consisted of eight similarly inscribed fragments evidently cut from the same manuscript (all repr. in sale catalogue; details of two, on a larger scale, in catalogue of 'Old Master Drawings presented by Jean-Luc Baroni at Douwes Fine Art', London, June-July 1980). Each fragment represents a Muse or other mythological personage traditionally associated with the invention of one of the arts or sciences. The presence of an eighteenth-century collector's mark on each fragment shows that the manuscript was mutilated at a fairly early date.
