- The mill shown was in Grays Walk, off Three Coney Walk (now Lambeth Walk) which was used for grinding materials for drugs from at least 1759 (see M. Short, Windmills in Lambeth: an historical survey, 1971, pp. 42-3). Sandby made at least three other views of the mill (two in the Guildhall Library and one belonging to Lambeth Public Libraries) and made a print after one of them which is dated 1780. The crisp style of this drawing suggests that it was made in the 1750s or 60s.
This drawing is very close to that exhibited in the exhibition 'London Delineated' at the Museum of London in 1981, No.16 from the collection of the Guildhall Library. It adds weight to the attention of the drawing to Sandby. This drawing has previously been attributed to Gideon Yates (1790-1837).
See M.Short, 'Windmills in Lambeth: A Historical Survey', (1971), pp.38-43.
