- Curator's comments
- This subject was previously incorrectly described as the blinding of Elymas, after Raphael's cartoon. It is in fact the Death of Ananias (another of the Raphael's tapestry cartoons in the V&A); but the direct source is a chiaroscuro woodcut by Ugo da Carpi: for an impression of the latter, see 1895,0122.1234.
Three drawings by Crawshaw were found unregistered in the collections in 1977 (1977, U.229, 232, 234); all are based on the Raphael cartoons from the Royal Collection now on loan to the V&A.The others may also be based on other woodcuts from the series.
