- Curator's comments
- This drawing entered the collection with an attribution to Henry Bone. On 26 March 2007 Stephen Lloyd, Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Cosway expert wrote to P&D: 'I can confirm that P&D has a Maria Cosway drawing (formerly attrib Henry Bone, ‘Cupid attacking the Three Fates’: acc no 1977-4-2-1). The Fondazione Cosway in Lodi owns a pair of etchings (with some aquatint), both lettered, Maria Cosway delt / Etch’d by Cardon [being A Cardon], and which can be dated to around 1800. These are unique impressions as far as I know. The paired subject shows ‘The Three Fates clipping Cupid’s Wings’. I will send you photocopies of these two images from Lodi.'
The photocopies will be kept in a dosier on the drawing and as the new attribution is convincing, the drawing will now be placed in the collection as Maria Cosway. KS 27 3 07
