A sketch on tracing paper for the ornamental design for the wrapper for 'Hop-o'my-Thumb' part of Cruikshank's 'Fairy Library'
The series and book title can be deciphered as can the name "D. Bogue" [publisher of the series]. The ornamental border and a seated figure with hands folded facing the viewer in the lower part of the composition are discernible. A figure group has been loosely defined at the centre of the composition.

- Curator's comments
- Description based on GW Reid 'A descriptive catalogue of the works of George Cruikshank.' Approximate production dates provided by GW Reid.
Reid described the final composition as (which was engraved by Thomas Williams) as follows: "The ornamental design on the wrapper, the title surrounded by a border having foxgloves growing on each side, and grotesque figures beneath seated on mushrooms writing. A vignette at the bottom represents an old woman telling a story to a circle of girls and boys." Therefore, it appears that some revisions were made to this design to arrive at the final design.
