A series of drawings/ tracings which develop designs for the plates of George Cruikshank's famous Temperance series 'The Bottle.' Reid 2709-2716:
Three studies for Plate 1. Reid 2709. 'The bottle is brought out for the first time, the husband induces his wife to take just a drop.'
Two studies for Plate 2. Reid 2710. 'He is discharged from his employment for drunkenness. They pawn their clothes to supply the Bottle.
Two studies for Plate 3. Reid 2711. 'An execution sweeps off the greater part of their furniture. They comfort themselves with the Bottle.
Two studies for Plate 4. Reid 2713. (See comment) 'Cold misery and want destroy their youngest child. They console themselves with the Bottle.
Two studies for Plate 5. Reid 2712. (See comment) 'Unable to obtain employment they are driven into the streets to beg and by this means they still supply the Bottle.
Two studies for Plate 6. Reid 2714. 'Fearful quarrels and brutal violence are the natural consequences of the frequent use of the Bottle.'
Two studies for Plate 7. Reid 2715. 'The husband in a state of furious drunkenness, kills his wife with the instrument of all their misery.
Two studies for Plate 8. Reid 2716. 'The bottle has done its work. It has destroyed the infant and the mother, it has brought the son and the daughter to vice and the streets and has left the father a hopeless maniac.'

- Description and date based on GW Reid: 'A descriptive catalogue of the works of George Cruikshank.' 1871.
Plate numbers are written beneath each illustration. However, Reid's catalogue reverses the order in which plates 4 and 5 appear in the series.
