- Curator's comments
- Date based on AM Cohn, 'George Cruikshank, catalogue raisonné. 1924.
Cruikshank contributed illustrations to several editions of The Pilgrim's Progress (See Cohn 96, 99, 100 and Reid 1841, 3555-3561, 4504, 4675, 4946.) This drawing appears to relate to Cohn 100, an edition illustrated with 25 drawings on wood by Cruikshank. According to Cohn, the drawings were in the possession of Mr Truman for many years and one thousand copies of the book, numbered and signed by Truman were issued and published by H. Frowde, Oxford University Press in 1903. Cohn does not give a date for Cruikshank's production of the drawings.
For further information on Cruikshank's tracings see curatorial comment for 1974,U.2103.
