- Curator's comments
- This print related to Reid 649 published in 'Jameson's Theatrical Characters' although it differs to a lettered, coloured print of the same subject in the British Museum's collection, 1865,1111.2648. It does not correspond exactly to Reid's description.
It was acquired through the bequest of Eliza Cruikshank which consisted of 4260 etchings and 4065 drawings by George Cruikshank and 2637 prints by other artists.
It has been filed with the George Cruikshank's miscellaneous sketches to reflect the context of their acquisition and this artist's drawing practice which included re-using prints, correspondence and documents as drawing surfaces and, in some cases, copying or taking visual cues from prints.
The range of George Cruikshank drawings acquired with Eliza Cruikshank's bequest encompasses highly resolved studies, working drawings and rapid sketches. Where it has not yet been possible to firmly identify or date these drawings they have been grouped thematically. The current records reflect this arrangement and a circa date from 1810-1878 has been used for groups of drawings which cannot be dated precisely. After further research it may be possible to date individual drawings more accurately through their content or the support and materials used. The date of the print does not necessarily correspond with the date of the drawing as Cruikshank seems at times to have recycled older prints for sketching years later.
