Contrary to what is stated in the inscription, the Emperor depicted here is not Trajan, see 1972,U.922.18. The scene is believed to represent Marcus Aurelius' act of liberalitas in 177 AD (in association with his son Commodus, whose effigy was probably initially present, but was removed from the relief following his damnatio memoriae).
