The painting is part of a series of frescoes executed by Domenichino and his assistants in the Stanza di Apollo in the garden pavilion of the Villa Aldobrandini. The original fresco has since been transferred onto canvas and is now in the National Gallery (NG6289). See Spear, 'Domenichino', 1982, vol. I, cat. No.51. This scene is Spear 51.viii.
