- Curator's comments
- Probably the preparatory drawing in reverse for the engraving published by Cock, see 1922,0410.264. Martin Royalton-Kisch suggests an inclusion in the group of 'Savery' imitations, sometimes designated as by the 'Master of the Mountain Landscapes'; see Martin Royalton-Kisch, 'Review: Hans Mielke, Pieter Bruegel Die Zeichnungen', in Burlington Magazine 140 (1998), pp. 207-8. It can be argued that the direction of this drawing (in reverse to the print) makes it less likely that this is a copy after the Bruegel print 'Solicitudo Rustica' and rather a preparatory study.
Literature: H. Mielke, Pieter Bruegel. Die Zeichnungen, 1996, cat.no.25 (much reworked original); Nadine M. Orenstein (ed.), 'Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Drawings and Prints', exhibition catalogue, The Metropolitan Museum of Arts New York and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, cat.no.125 (as 'Master of the Mountain Landscapes').
