Gere & Pouncey 1983
Attributed in Sotheby's sale to the Cavaliere d'Arpino, this is in fact a study by Tibaldi for the shepherd seated in the right background of the 'Adoration of the Shepherds' in the Borghese Gallery (see Pp,2.187). The pose of the figure corresponds exactly with the painting, but the drawing is of high quality and has none of the indications of a copy. Copyists generally get into difficulties when required to improvise, there is no sign of this in the drawing, though in the painting the lower part of the l. leg and part of the fold of drapery between the legs are obscured by the head of a figure in the foreground. The drawing closely resembles Pp,2.187 in the firm, careful and at the same time sensitive handling of the black chalk and - even more obviously - in the idiosyncratic form and modelling of the right hand.
