- Curator's comments
- This is probably a portrait of William Penn, after the original scultpure by Silvanus Bevan (1691-1765), an apothecary and amateur sculptor of Plough Court, Lombard St, City of London. Many of his reliefs were translated into plaques by Wedgwood. There is a print based on this relief sculpture by du Simitiere (see NPG D19608, William Penn by John Hall, after Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, after Sylvanus Bevan, line engraving, 1773 (October 1770)).
