- Curator's comments
- This album is a compilation of 23 lithographs and 1 aquatint from various series. It is rather difficult to reconstruct for each plate the exact series because such touristic views generally were used for several editions and also passed from one publisher to another. This can be seen in the print 16) by Friedrich Salathe after a drawing by Maximilien de Meuron. This aquatint first appeared as plate 16 in 'Voyage pittoresque dans la vallée de Chamouni et autour de Mont-Blanc', Paris, Osterwald, 1826 (see Anton Gattlen, L'estampe topographique du Valais, 2 vols, Brigue 1987-1992, vol. 1, p. 103, no. 718). However, the print in our album does not belong to this edition since it is lettered '52'. The changing number is because another Paris publisher, Wild, later bought the printing plate and published the print as plate 52 of a different series.
Gattlen (op. cit., vol. I, pp. 58-59) suggested that the name 'A. Charlet' stamped on the front cover refers to the librarian who published the album. On the other hand, the name can also refer to Armand Charlet, a pioneer mounteneer in the Mont Blanc massiv where Robert Wylie Lloyd himself made several climbs.
