- Curator's comments
- This is the second volume of the publication. The first volume is also kept in the Lloyd collection, see 1958,0712.3007 (1-64).
The prints of this publication date from 1834 to 1836. They probably appeared first as single sheets before then have been published in two volumes together with the text in 1836. For the orientation of the bookbinder, a page with directions on where to insert the prints was included in each volume. There is no doubt that the costume prints were inlaid at the same time because their mountings have watermarks dated 1836. The costume prints by Gabriel Lory fils and Friedrich Wilhelm Moritz had been published beforehand in a series of 55 numbered plates in 1824.
For more information, see William Beattie, Die Schweiz. Mit Stahlstichen nach Original-Zeichnungen von William Henry Bartlett, ausgeführt von den vorzüglichsten Künstlern Englands, with a introduction by Bruno Weber, Zurich, Edition Olms, 1979
