- William Tell is best known for shooting an apple placed on the top of his son’s head. A symbol of republican freedom he was, according to legend, arrested for defying a tyranical Austrian bailiff, Baron Gessler in the early fourteenth century. He escaped on his way to prison and assassinated Gessler, sparking the rebellion which led to Swiss independence from the Habsburg empire. A chapel has stood on the spot where he is said to have leapt to his freedom since the sixteenth century.
