This scene originally formed the third page in the Liber Veritatis, and records a painting that the inscription reveals was made for a Parisian client, but which is now lost. It has been dated by both Roethlisberger and Kitson to circa 1635 on account of a dated etching by Claude that incorporates the same figures (see Blum No. 7). Even though the last digit of the date on this etching is not clear, a production date in the middle of the 1630s is justified by the sweeping use of intense wash combined with a free handling of the pen. Moreover, and as Whiteley has observed, the enlargement of the figures vis-à-vis the etched composition suggests that the drawing (and the painting it corresponded to) pre-dates the etching. The scene should also be compared with another drawing in the BM (for which see Oo,7.198) which is dated to the same timeframe.
The verso features sketches of a group of four mean and various buildings that occur in other Seaports Claude depicted in the 1630s (for which see LV Nos.2, 4, 9, 10). This and the sketches on the verso of LV 5 are the only ones in the Liber Veritatis that are ‘upside down’ which supports the hypothesis that the Liber was not started until LV 6, especially as this sheet and LV numbers 1–5 were loose sheets inserted to the beginning of the bound Album.
