The painting that this drawing records was made in 1644 and which is now in the Musee des Beaux Arts, Grenoble (for which see Roethlisberger 1961, fig. 152). It features an accurate depiction of the Temple of the Sibyl at Tivoli which is incorporated into an idealised landscape. The present drawing is notable for its effective plays of light and shade, achieved through the mid-ground and sensitive application of white heightening, that creates a delicate scene. In this aesthetic it compres with various other paintings Claude made in the 1640s, see for instance LV 52 and LV 53, and which develop from the studies of the landscape around Tivoli that Claude made in his Tivoli Album (for which see Oo,6.80). A preparatory study for the figures originates from the Animal Album (see Roethlisberger 1968, no. 552).
This painting was commissioned for Michel Passart, and formed a pendant to LV 89 ‘View of the Campagna from Tivoli’ (see 1957,1214.95). Passart was a long term patron of Claude, who in the 1660s dedicated two prints and two drawings to him (for discussion see Roethlisberger 1961, pp.225–26), and who was also a patron of Poussin.
