Claude started to incorporate imaginary or idealised views of Tivoli from the 1640s onwards; at around the same time that he started making studies of the hilltop city in his Tivoli Album (for which see Oo,6.80). This is the third such instance recorded in the Liber (for the others see LV 62 and 65) but this here is more accurate a view than the preceding two examples with the effect of appearing somewhat like a souvenir.
It records exactly the painting on copper that Claude made in 1642 for an unknown patron. This work is now in the Courtauld Gallery (inv. no. P.1978.PG.64); Roethlisberger 1961, pp.209–210) and is notable for its luminosity in the diffusion of light from the setting sun. This is an effect that Claude did not seek to replicate in the drawing, but yet which he did in other drawings in the Liber, particularly those on blue paper (compare for instance 1957,1214.72). For these reasons, Rand suggested that this drawing may have anticipated the painting rather than following it: this opinion was exacerbated by his remarks on the loose handling of pen and ink in the drawing.
