The inscription on the verso of this drawing ‘quadro per il Re di Spagno’ leaves no ambiguity that it records one of the four paintings that Claude made for Philip IV of Spain and which are now in the Prado (Roethsliberger 1961, fig.112; inv. no. 2253). It forms a pair with LV48, and the other two paintings are LV49 and LV50. These are unusual in the Liber Veritatis (for which see 1957,1214.6) on account of their vertical format. Together, they not only record an important commission, but also mark the beginning of a new phase in Claude’s artistic development. They attest to a more monumental style in rendering landscape and a more classical language. It is not clear why the painting’s subjects were chosen but it must have been the decision of the patron. The present drawing is finely rendered with a minimal use of wash, making the composition very legible which might perhaps be explained for by the fact that Claude referred back to this important commission on multiple occasions.
