This drawing records a painting by Claude now in The Metropolitan Museum (inv. no. 65.181.12; Roethlisberger 1968, LV42, pp.173–74). The inscription on the verso reveals that it was made for a patron in Paris, but gives no further details. The drawing closely corresponds to the painting except that it shows an extra standing peasant girl to the left of the seated shepherd, however, the picture is in poor state and it is clear that this figure has been painted out since Claude’s time. It is among some of the few blue paper drawings in the Liber Veritatis (for which see 1957,1214.6) and is drawn with a particular emphasis on white heightening and pale wash.
