The Rest on the Flight to Egypt was a favoured subject of Claude’s, and he depicted it in several drawings and paintings. This, however, is the first occasion on which it appears in his Liber Veritatis (on which see 1957,1214.6). The painting that this drawing records was made for Cardinal Giorio in 1639, whose elevation to Cardinal in 1643 serves as a terminus post quem for the addition of the identifying inscription. The painting is now in Notre Dame Art Gallery, Indiana (Roethlisberger 1961, no. LV38, pp.168–69). The Rest on the Flight to Egypt was a favoured subject of Claude’s, and he depicted it in several drawings and paintings. This, however, is the first occasion on which it appears in the Liber.
