This drawing was added to the end of the Liber Veritatis after Claude's death (see 1957,1214.202 for further comment). It can be identified as a study for
for Claude’s painting of The Embarkation of St Ursula in the National Gallery, London, LV 54, of 1641 (for which see 19571214.60). This makes this sheet stand out within the Liber as the rest of the album was conceived to contain copies amde after completed paintings by Claude as opposed to drawings preparatory to them. The present design is still some distance away from the completed composition, and Claude seems to have been experimenting with a 16th-century type of ‘north European’ tower, appropriate to the subject, which he afterwards abandoned.
