Painting
Frankfurt a/Main, Städelsches Kunstinstitut. Canvas, 83 x 139 cm; signed and dated ‘Claudio I.V.F. Roma 1681’. RP, fig. 313; R-C, 272; Like its pendant, this painting is much wider in proportion to its width than the drawing, and the composition of the latter is much compressed, the contraction occurring both in the centre at the left. However, despite this and despite the unsteadiness of Claude’s penwork in the drawing of the figures, the details correspond remarkably to those in the painting.
