This is the last of four paintings that Claue produced for Henri van Halmale (for discussion see 1957,1214.158) and is now in the Hermitage, St Petersburg (inv. no. 1237; canvas, 116 x 159 cm; Roethlisberger 1986, no. 257). It formed a pendant with LV169, of Jacob, Rachel and Leah at the Well (see 1957,1214.175), and it is therefore notable that while Claude depicted Jacob and the Angel on numerous occasions across his career, this is the unique occasion that he depicted this specific biblical episode. As with the other paintings that Claude made in the years surrounding 1670, the composition is innovative to Claude’s corpus, and was developed across a number of compositional drawings (for discussion of those made in prepatration for, and those made after, see Roethlisberger 1968, nos. 1048–1056, and for one in the BM, see inv. no. Oo,8.245). The present drawing is notable for its strong chiaroscuro, effected by the heavy use of dark wash in the foreground and the light swathes of a thinner grey in the background. Like other drawings from this period, the ink is a pale grey and has a very fine duct.
