Virgil’s Aenid was a source that Claude referred to across his career, and this scene of Aeneas hunting in Libya derives from the same text. Notably, the inscription ‘folio 10’ on the recto of the sheet refers to A. Caro’s 1623 transaltion of this text, and which Claude presumably used as his reference for all of his depictions. Notably, this is one of the few instances in the latter phases of Claude’s career in which he devised an entirely new landscape scene, even if elements of it might be compared to LV175 and LV145. This might be explained by the fact that this painting numbers among the more personal works that Claude made in the late 1660s. Indeed, the development of this scene can be traced across a series of compositional drawings including the most resolved one, which is in the BM (see inv. no. Oo,6.116; for the rest see Rotethlisberger 1968, nos. 989–992). The painting is among those that were commissioned by Prince Falconieri, and it formed a pendant with LV183 (inv. no. 1957,1214.189) which depicts Aeneas with the Sibyl and which complements it in the overall setting and the effect of light. The painting is now in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Brussels (inv. no. 276; canvas 111 x 158 cm; see Roethlisberger 1986, no. 256).
