The painting that this drawing records is now in the National Gallery (inv. no. 1018; canvas, 99.7 x 34 cm; Roethlisberger 1986, no. 255) and appears to have been commissioned by Seigneur du Plessis, who was a French secretary of State. It depicts the meeting between Aeneas, Anius, Anchises and Ascanius landing on the shores of Delios after having escaped from Troy. Reothlisberger believes that this scene was chosen by Claude, and ranks this painting among Claude’s more personal works from the late 1660s. That Claude referred to this narrative as described in Ovid’s Metamorphoses as opposed to from Virgil’s Aenid is indicated by an inscription on a a drawing last recorded in the Brandegee Collection, Boston (see Roethlisberger 1968, no. 1043). This drawing is also the last in a series of four composisional studies for this composition, the earliest of which is dated 1669, and is the one that shows the scene in its final solution (for the others see Roethlisberger 1068, nos. 1040–1042). The composition is developed from LV70 (for which see 1957,1214.76) and elements from LV119 (see 1957,1214.125) which depicts a View of Delphi with a Procession. The present drawing corresponds closely to the completed painting, with the exception of a more spacious handling of the scene. This factor ma in part be attributed to the manner in which Claude use a fine pen and delicate grey wash to record the scene.
