The octagonal framing device on this drawing was made by Claude himself, and corresponds to the painting (on copper) now at Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. It was purchased by Agnew's at Christie's London, 29 November 1968, lot no. 74 and then sold to James Fairfax AC in 1973 who kept it until 09 Jul 1992, date on which Fairfax donated it to Art Gallery of New South Wales. The inscription on the painting is falsely signed ‘CLAVDIO 1641’. According to Kitson, the correct date is 1636 on account of the drawing’s placement within the Liber. It appears to have been made for a client from Liege.
