Claude depicted this Ovidian episode on multiple occasions, and collectively they reflect Claude’s development as an artist. In the present scene, Claude continued with his departure from giving both gods equal prominence to spacing them out so as to guide the eye through the landscape. This latter device was first deployed in LV92 (see 1957,1214.98) and then modified in LV135 (for which see 1957,1214.141). The simplification of the scene is here a repercussion of the scale of the painting that it records, which is now in the Wallace Collection (inv. no. P 114; canvas, 76 x 111 cm; see Roethlisbrger 1986, no. 222 The patron appears to have been the Flemish artist Cornelis de Wael, though it is possible that he was acting as an agent for another Flemish patron. It may have formed a pendant with LV159 (for which see 1957,1214.165). The composition can also be described as a simplified variation of LV148, and in this respect reflects Claude’s increasing recycling of his landscapes at the height of his career. For preparatory drawings, see Roethlisberger 1968, nos. 847 and 848.
