Various elements that had interested Claude across his career are brought together in this scene, including the livestock (on which see the Animal Album, 1895,0915.916), the ancient Roman columns and the feathery trees. These were first combined for Claude’s etching of the same scene which he made in 1651 (for which see Blum 1923, no. 36) upon which the present composition depends, albeit in reverse. Comparison with the preparatory drawing for the etching shows how much Claude depended on this composition (see Roethlisberger 1968, no. 685, formerly in Holkham Hall). It can also be related to two preparatory drawings, one at Chatsworth (inv. no. 941; Roethlisberger 1968, no. 740) and a study for the figures also in the BM (see inv. no. Oo,7.139). The painting was commissioned by an Agostino Bagiano who remins unknown as an individual. It was acquired by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand (canvas, 56 x 77.5 cm; Roethlisberger 1986, no. 201) from the former owners as part of the De Beer Gift in 1983 as part of over 260 items, painting, drawings and prints that were distributed between the Dunedin Art Gallery and the Otago Museum.
