Pastoral Landscapes were recurrent across the oeuvre of Claude, and the present composition compares in many ways to others in the Liber Veritiatis (on which see 1957,1214.6) such as Numbers 91, 93 94, 103 and 105. It incorporates moregrandiose motifs that earlier compositions, such as the tall framing tree and the remote mountains. The figures in the foreground appear to be an amourous couple, with no identifiable literary subject, and are preceded by a figural study also in the BM (see inv. no. Oo,7.140; Roethslisberger 1968, no. 687). The painting that it records was recorded in Roethlisberger 1968, no. 687 as being in the possession of Mrs R. Kress, NY, and by Kitson 1978 as being in the Met. According to Christian Klemm in June 2021, the painting is still in the Kress collection. The inscription on the verso of the drawing erroneaously names this drawing as the Embarkation of Saint Paula for Jerusalem, which instead refers to the composition recorded in LV120 (see 1957,1214.126).
