The painting that this drawing records was produced for Cardinal Cecchini in 1650, and is the sole work that Claude made for this patron. The painting now thought to be in the Louvre (inv. no. 318; Roethlisberger 1986, no. 188, where location specified as in the Musée des Vosges in Epinal, depot du Louvre, inv. no. 4720, canvas, 105 x 150 cm). However, according to information provided by Christian Klemm in June 2021 in advance of his forthcoming catalogue raisonnee of Claude's paintings, this version in the Louvre is a copy. The original appears to have been sold at Christies London on 3 December 2013, lot. 21. The composition derives from one that Claude composed in 1633/34 (LV2; 1957,1214.8), and in this respect could be deemed somewhat antiquated. Various motifs are incorporated from the other Seaports that Claude produced in the 1640s such as LV49 and LV114 from which the portico on the left derives. The drawing itself is rather crudely rendered, with the wash being applied quite thickly on the figures in the foreground to the extent that it obscures the penwork.
