Pastoral landscapes are recurrent across Claude’s output, and the present composition is a rather uninspired iteration. It was made for the German Hans Georg Werdmuller who commissioned three landscapes for Claude (see the others LV115 and 124). The present painting is on copper, and is the last that Claude painted on this support, and is now in the Yale Art Gallery, New Haven (inv. no. 1959.47; canvas, Roethlisberger 1986, nop. 184). The drawing corresponds directly to the painting with the exception of slight modifications to the scale of the figures. A related landscape drawing is in the Louvre (see inv. no. 26,690; Roethlisberger 1968, no. 658).
